Bison Field Hockey Falls in Patriot League Matchup to Holy Cross, 2-1

WORCESTER - The Bucknell field hockey team fell in Patriot League action Saturday afternoon to first place Holy Cross, 2-1. The Crusaders sits on top of the league tied with American with a 12-3 (4-0 PL) record, while the Bison fell to 6-7 (1-3 PL). Senior Katie Urosevich (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) tallied the lone goal for the Orange and Blue.
In the opening half, Bucknell struck first when Urosevich collected a rebound off a penalty corner and shot it past the Crusaders goalkeeper in the 10th minute to put the Bison up 1-0. The goal gives Urosevich six goals and 14 points in the season, which are both career-highs for the senior. Holy Cross answered the Bucknell goal when Tara Welch tallied the first of her two goals of the match in the 20th minute off a rebound to tie the game at 1-1.
The half ended with a 1-1 tie with Holy Cross winning the advantage in shots taken 7-2. Senior Emily Groendyke (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) notched five first-half saves.
In the second, Welch netted her second goal of the game when she collected a rebound and fired a shot past Groendyke to put the Crusaders up 2-1 with a little over 30 minutes left in the match. Bucknell took five shots in the second half but could not turn them into goals.
Groendyke ended the match with seven saves, while Holy Cross goalie Erin Singleton notched four saves. The Bison were outshot 14-7 but held even with the Crusaders in penalty corners, 5-5.
The Bucknell field hockey team will battle Brown in Providence, R.I., on Sunday, Oct. 22, in a non-conference match. The game will begin at 1 p.m. The Bison will also wrap up Patriot League action on Oct. 28, in Easton, Pa., against Lafayette beginning at 1 p.m.
