PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Bucknell women's golf team enjoyed winning a tournament so much, they are poised to do it again. Teri Schlang's 77 in cool, windy conditions helped the Bucknell women's golf team grab a one-shot lead after the first of two rounds at the Rutgers Invitational on Friday.
In its most recent outing two weeks ago, Bucknell won the Bison Fall Classic for its first tournament title in the nine-year history of the program, and now the Bison are trying to make it back-to-back victories. The Bison nosed out Lehigh by a single stroke for that win in Lewisburg, and once again this week the Mountain Hawks find themselves just a shot behind the Orange & Blue.
Bucknell posted a 316 in the opening round, one better than Lehigh and Columbia. Fourth-place Boston University is seven shots back after shooting 323. Penn (326), Long Island (329) and Towson (335) round out the top seven in a 15-team field. Fellow Big South rival Holy Cross is 14th (378).
Only 12 of the 73 players broke 80 in the stiff breezes, and the Bison claimed two of them. Schlang, who was medalist at the Bison Fall Classic, shot a 5-over-par 77 that puts her in a two-way tie for second place, three shots behind Columbia's Sara Ovadia. Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) carded a 78 and sits in a tie for fourth place.
Also for the Bison, Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) is tied for 13th place after shooting an 80, Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot 81 and is tied for 18th, and Kathryn Batchelor (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day School) shot 85 and is tied for 38th.
Bucknell is scheduled to tee off in round two at 10 a.m. Saturday.
