Men's and Women's Swimming Teams Finish Third at Florida Gulf Coast Relay Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming teams each took home third place finishes at the Florida Gulf Coast Relay Invitational on Friday on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University. The women totaled 148 points in the five-team meet, ahead of Providence with 24 points and Shippensburg with 20, while finishing just behind Brown (206 points) and Western Kentucky (192 points). The men had 116 points to finish ahead of Shippensburg (36 points) and Providence (6 points), but fell short of the totals posted by Western Kentucky (270 points) and Brown (164 points).
On the women's side, the team of freshman Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), junior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore), senior Lectie Altman (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham) and senior Mary Krakowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:43.89.
Bucknell's women also took second in the 300 fly relay, 200 medley relay, 300 back relay and the 400 IM relay. Junior Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Krakowski, and senior Lauren Reed (South Plainfield, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) swam the 300 fly relay in 2:59.29. Altman, junior Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), Krakowski and Scheffter finished with a time of 1:52.37 in the 200 medley relay. Altman, Munson and freshman Ally St. Claire (Sliver Spring, Md.) completed the 300 back relay in 3:01.87 and the team of Munson, Reed, freshman Nikki Seaman (Cleveland, Ohio), and Woodward posted a time of 4:14.16 in the 400 IM relay.
For the men, freshman Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area), sophomore Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), senior Mark Kretzer (Northport, N.Y./Harborfields) and sophomore Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) captured second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.43.
The Bison men also earned third place finishes in the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay, 300 back relay and the 400 IM relay. Kawcenski, Steadman, Bennett and senior Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) completed the 200 free relay in 1:29.21. Kawcenski, Bennett, Kretzer and Steadman finished the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.58. Kawczenski, freshman Nicholas Hanes (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and Kretzer combined for a time of 2:46.45 in the 300 back relay, while sophomore Theo Leriotis (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional Senior High), sophomore Matthew McGraw (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport), Kretzer and Hanes swam the 400 IM relay in 3:51.51.
Bucknell will return to action on Friday, Jan. 13, when the team will travel to West Point, N.Y., to take on Patriot League foe Army at 5 p.m.
