LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) scored a game-high 18 points and Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) added 17, including eight in a three-minute stretch late in the second half, as the Bucknell women's basketball team won its fourth straight game, 74-54 over Navy Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.
The Bison, which improved to 12-7 overall and 5-1 in the Patriot League, jumped past Army and into first place in the Patriot League standings. Holding first place entering the weekend, the Black Knights lost to Colgate Saturday afternoon. Holy Cross, which entered the weekend tied for second with Bucknell, defeated Lehigh to keep pace in the standings with the Bison.
Navy (10-9, 3-3 PL) built a 21-15 lead, its largest of the game, midway through the first half, but Bucknell quickly tallied eight points in less than three minutes to take a 23-21 lead. The Bison never trailed again.
After leading just 33-30 with two minutes to play before intermission, Bucknell scored seven of the final nine points of the first half thanks to a pair of steals from Hollobaugh. Hollobaugh made a pair of free throws and then stole the Navy inbounds pass and immediately scored. She then stole the next inbounds pass as Bucknell employed an effective full court press. After the ball squirted out of bounds, Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) converted a three-point play to give Bucknell seven points without the Mids crossing halfcourt.
Navy hung tough in the second half, not allowing Bucknell to pull ahead by more than 12 points until Brown got hot and made three driving layups and one jumper in a span of five possessions to help the Bison take a 65-49 lead with just over four minutes to play.
Bucknell extended the lead out to a game-high 22 points (74-52) following a pair of free throws by Corrine Keller (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) with less than 30 seconds to play.
Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) tallied 13 points off the bench to round out the trio of Bison in double figures. It was her second consecutive double-figure scoring game and third of the year.
Despite playing just 19 minutes because of foul trouble, Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) spearheaded the Bucknell rebounding effort with eight boards to go along with eight points. The Bison, who saw their starting backcourt of Brown, Champion and Hollobaugh combine for 19 rebounds, outrebounded the Mids 42-32. Foster, who leads the Patriot League in blocked shots, did fail to block a shot for the first time in 34 games.
Bucknell, which has not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 40 percent since the second game of the season, limited Navy to 35.6 percent shooting from the field. The Bison made 45 percent of their field goals and 19 of 26 free throws. The Mids converted seven free throws on just nine attempts.
Betsy Burnett and Margaret Knap led Navy with 12 points apiece, while Burnett paced the squad with nine rebounds. Ashley Pelzek, who entered the game averaging a team-high 14.4 points per game, was held to eight, while Carly Meyer, who was second on the team in scoring at better than 11 points per contest, tallied just four.
Bucknell, which is in the midst of its second four-game winning streak of the season for the first time since 2001-02, concludes its four-game homestand Wednesday, Feb. 1, against Lafayette. Tip-off for the game is at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
