LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's track and field team collected two Patriot League Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honors, for performances at the Bucknell "Heptagonal," held in Lewisburg, Pa., on Saturday Jan. 21, the league office announced on Tuesday morning. Junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area), of the women's team, earned the honor for her 13 feet, 3 1/2 inch leap in the pole vault, while junior Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), of the men's team, won the award for his 58-4 heave in the weight throw.
Buczko, who qualified for the ECAC Championships earlier this season, set a new Gerhard Fieldhouse record in the pole vault on Saturday and hit the NCAA Provisional Mark. Saturday's leap marked her season's best jump, but it did not beat her current personal record and the Orange and Blue's all-time record height in the event (13-5 1/2), set in the 2004-05 indoor season.
Hoffman picked up the first honor of his career, while Saturday's heave set a personal best and bumped him up to the Bison's number three best athlete in the weight throw. Earlier in the season, Hoffman qualified for the IC4A Championships in the event and also became Bucknell's sixth-best all-time finisher.
Both of the Bison's track and field squads pulled off team victories at the "Heptagonal" and will be looking for other meet titles as both squads will have representatives at the Bison Open and at the Penn State National Invite this coming weekend, starting on Friday, Jan 27 and finishing on Saturday, Jan. 28.
