Bucknell Men's Tennis Unbeaten in Singles in Day One at Connecticut Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - Bucknell's men's tennis team went undefeated in singles this afternoon at the Connecticut Invitational in Storrs, Conn., in day one of action. The men won all but one match in doubles and defeated athletes from Fairfield, Boston University, Lehigh and Holy Cross.
Winning all their matches on the day for the Bison were John Lashnits (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely), Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), Matt Pikus (Medford, N.J./Lenape) and Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic). Lashnits advanced in the singles main draw bracket with a bye and won his doubles match with partner, Salam over Lehigh, 8-4. Salam won his singles match 6-4, 6-1, over Fairfield's Stephen Kouri. Pikus won his singles match over Matthew Chiricosta, of Fairfield, 6-2, 6-2, and won his doubles match, 8-5, over Boston, with partner Ira Rebeisen. Bednarek defeated Fairfield's Balazs Sikla 6-0, 6-3, and won his doubles matches over Holy Cross (8-4) and Lehigh (8-1), with partner Brian Cohen.
Also winning in singles for the Blue and Orange was Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) in a tight, tie-breaking set over Karim Zahran, of Boston, 6-4, 4-6, (10-3). Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) won his singles match over Fairfield's Glen Gannon (6-2, 6-1). The team of Young and Sandburg barely lost their doubles match to Quinnipiac, 9-7, in the only defeat for Bucknell.
"We played very, very strong in singles," said head coach Rebecca Helt, "and doubles also went really well. We look forward to more action tomorrow with two singles rounds and one doubles."
The Bison will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 1, for day two of competition, with nine matches to play in the main draw bracket.
