LEWISBURG, Pa. - In the 88th minute, freshman Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) collected her own rebound and found the back of the net to lead the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Cornell at the Varsity Soccer Field on Tuesday evening. The Bison improved to 6-4-0 on the year and handed the 6-1-0 Big Red their first loss of the season. The victory extended Bucknell's winning streak to five straight, matching a program record set during the 2000 season.
Cornell jumped on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead at 8:57 into the contest after Molly Easterlin carried the ball in and past Bison netminder Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy).
Bucknell responded less than 10 minutes later as junior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) received the ball from sophomore Krista Lee Gentile (Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) off a throw in and fired a shot into the top left corner of the Big Red's goal to tie the score at one with her team-leading ninth goal of the season 17:54 into the contest.
At 19:49 however, Cornell regained its one-goal lead. Whitney Hughes sent a pass to Caitlin Oliver who knocked the ball past Dry and into an open net.
The score would remain at 2-1 until the 82nd minute when Bucknell freshman Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) scored from point blank range after the ball came to her on a free kick by Margolis.
Then with just under three minutes remaining in regulation, Dervarics notched her fourth of the season to secure the victory for the Bison after a flurry of shots in front of the Big Red's net.
Cornell outshot Bucknell 19-7, while the Bison held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Dry stopped a season-high 10 shots in net for Bucknell while Taylor Hendren made two saves for the Big Red. Fouls were 11-5 against Cornell.
The Bison return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1, when the team will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to open Patriot League play with a match against Colgate, beginning at 7 p.m.
