LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Krista Lee Gentile (Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) scored the deciding goal on a penalty kick at 57:13 to lead the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) at the Varsity Soccer Field on Tuesday evening. The victory extended the Bison's win streak to four, the team's longest since Sept. 2002, and moved their record to 5-4-0 on the year. The Red Flash dropped to 4-4-1 with the loss.
The Bison jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half as sophomore Leslie Schulze (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) fed the ball to Gentile in front and she fired a shot past Saint Francis goalkeeper Melanie Stockman for her first tally of the night 4:29 into the contest.
Saint Francis responded quickly with Nicole Khanna knotting the score at one with her fourth of the season from Ashlie Knowles on a rush up the field at 6:44.
Senior Lexi Shore (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) helped Bucknell regain its one-goal advantage. At 14:38, she sent a cross to junior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) who chipped a shot into the net to notch her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
For a second time in the match, the Red Flash managed to erase the one-goal deficit and tie the score. In front of the Bucknell net, Meghan Pearson intercepted a clearing pass and sent the ball into the Bison goal at 56:26.
Less than one minute later, Gentile was awarded the penalty kick and tallied her second of the game. The Bison managed to hold the score at 3-2 the rest of the way, successfully defending against six Saint Francis corner kicks in the second half.
Both teams played a physical match as five cards were issued in the contest, three against the Red Flash (two yellow, one red) and two against Bucknell (yellow). The Bison outshot Saint Francis, 11-9 and the Red Flash led in corners, 7-6. Fouls were 11-9 against Saint Francis. Senior goalkeeper Samantha Hecht (Pompano Beach, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas) stopped two shots for BU while Stockman made five saves in net for Saint Francis.
Bucknell will remain idle for the rest of the week and will next face Cornell at home on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
