NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sophomore Krista Lee Gentile gave Bucknell an early lead, but the squad could not hold on as the Bison fell to St. John's by a 2-1 margin in women's soccer action at the Columbia Tournament on Friday afternoon. With the setback, Bucknell's record slides to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Red Storm improves to 1-1-0.
Just 2:53 into the contest, the Bison jumped out in front 1-0 as junior Caitlyn Kuntz served the ball into the boxt to Gentile who brought it down with a touch and sent it past Jaime Beran from point blank range.
In the 15th minute, however, Lauren McGrory netted the equalizer for St. John's as she headed the ball into the net off a cross from Brittany Cavarra.
Then with the first half drawing to a close, Julianna Cohen scored the game-winner as she capitalized on a free kick opportunity at the 43:20 mark, firing a laser shot that penetrated Bucknell's wall.
The teams played a scoreless second half, but the Bison narrowly missed a comeback, hitting the post twice in the final five minutes. The first opportunity was a shot by sophomore Kim Cannon from 25 yards out that hit the iron and the second came on a header by Kuntz.
Shots were even at eight apiece and Bucknell held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Katie Dry made three saves for the Bison while Beran and Rebecca Capinera stopped two shots apiece for the Red Storm.
Bucknell will continue play in the Columbia Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 3, with a match against host school Columbia at 2 p.m.
