LEWISBURG, Pa. - Behind two goals from Jennifer Margolis, and a single score from Kerry Fitz-Patrick, the Bucknell women's soccer team defeated Marist Friday evening at Varsity Soccer Field in a game shortened by lightning storms. The match was delayed for an hour and a half because of lightning before being called an official game at the 76:29 mark.
Margolis netted the game-winning goal, her third of the season, with 18:57 remaining in the contest, just 5:26 before the game was stopped. Marist tried to clear the ball following a Bucknell (3-4-0) corner kick, but Caitlyn Kuntz intercepted it and passed the ball ahead to Krista Lee Gentile. Gentile gained control and quickly gave it to Margaret Emmitt on the right side of the goal. Emmitt crossed it over to Margolis, who was stationed directly in front of the goal. The score was the second of the game, and sixth of the season for Margolis, who leads the Bison with 13 points this season.
Margolis opened the scoring 3:01 into the back-and forth game that featured 1-1 and 2-2 ties. Gentile picked up the assist when she attempted to cross a rolling shot from the left side of the box into the net. As the ball was nearing the goal line, having already skipped past Marist (1-5-0) goalkeeper Anna Case, Margolis slid and knocked it in for the early lead. The assist made it six straight games that Gentile has scored at least one point.
The Bison did not hold the advantage for long as the Red Foxes answered just 42 seconds later when Jenna McCrory lofted the ball over the head of Bucknell goalkeeper Katie Dry.
Kerry Fitz-Patrick gave Bucknell the lead in the 19th minute with a flurry of shots from point-blank range. The junior had her first shot saved by Case, but picked up the loose ball and fired another shot that hit the crossbar. The ball deflected into a crowd of people and Fitz-Patrick came away with it and finally found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Neither team netted another goal until Justine Caccamo gathered in a rebound from a shot off the foot of McCrory and slipped it past Dry. It was Caccamo's team-high fourth goal of the season.
Despite winning by just one goal, Bucknell dominated the offensive end of the field as it outshot Marist by a 19-5 margin, including 12-2 in the first half. The Bison also tallied five corner kicks to the Red Foxes' two.
Dry was called upon to make just two saves in the winning effort for the Bison. Her counterpart, Case, tallied five saves.
With her two goals and four points in the game Margolis further solidified herself among the Bucknell career leaders in goals and points. Her 14 career goals are tied with Tara Utchel for eighth place on the Bison career list, while her 36 career points rank eighth on that list. Despite not tallying an assist against Marist, she is 10th on that list with eight in her career.
Prior to the game a ceremony was held to dedicate the Varsity Soccer Field. In its first season of play on the brand new field, Bucknell is 3-1-0 at home.
The Bison return to action Sunday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Moon Township, Pa., to battle in-state foe Robert Morris at 1 p.m.
