LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Jennifer Margolis netted her second game-winner of the season to lead the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Fairfield at home on Sunday afternoon. The Bison improved their record to 2-4-0, while the Stags slid to 2-2-0 on the year.
Bucknell opened the scoring in the eighth minute as a flurry of shots, which began with senior Kerry Fitz-Patrick hitting the post, created a scramble in front of the Fairfield net. The ball came to sophomore Leslie Schulze and she fed a pass over to classmate Krista Lee Gentile who made it a 1-0 game with her fourth of the season.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Stags evened the score at one as Shannon Helm sent a pass up the field to Ahna Johnson who lofted the ball over the head of Bison netminder Kaite Dry at the 17:12 mark.
Bucknell then answered at 22:25 after capitalizing on a corner kick opportunity. Schulze took the corner for the Bison and the ball deflected off a Fairfield defender to sophomore Kim Cannon who fired a shot home to regain the lead for BU.
Margolis' tally came in the second half as Fitz-Patrick sent a pass to her in front and she found the back of the net to make it a 3-1 advantage for the Bison 76:59 into the contest. The goal would prove to be a valuable one for Bucknell as a miscue resulted in an own goal and cut the lead to one with just one minute remaining in regulation.
The Bison outshot the Stags, 17-7, but Fairfield led in corner kicks, 6-5. Fouls were 10-5 against Bucknell. Brett Maron made five saves in net for the Stags while Katie Dry stopped one shot for the Bison.
Bucknell returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16, with a 3 p.m. match at home against Marist College.
