BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Eric Brunton led the Bucknell men's soccer team to its third 1-0 victory of the season with a goal early in the first half as the Bison defeated Richmond Sunday afternoon at Alumnae Field during the final day of the Loyola Classic.
Brunton, who now has 12 career goals, headed a ball in past Richmond (1-3) goalkeeper Eric Sciocchetti, who made five saves in the game, just 6:53 into the contest. Jason Soto and Joe Mellott were credited with assists on the play as Mellott gave the ball to Soto who headed it to Brunton.
"We played great soccer today," commented Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "Corey Curnutte, especially, had an outstanding weekend for us."
Posting his third shutout of the year was senior Bison goalkeeper Adam Edwards. The Downingtown, Pa,, native now has 21 career shutouts to stand three shy of tying the Bucknell record. Edwards made four saves to boost his season total to 25, and he lowered his goals-against average to 0.75.
After scoring the early goal, the Bucknell defense packed it in and tried to hang on to the lead. The Bison attempted seven shots in the first half, but just two after intermission. Richmond, on the other hand, took three first-half shots, but fired nine in the second.
Host Loyola, who the Bison defeated 1-0 Friday night, faced Towson in the final game of the weekend tournament.
Bucknell will play its very first game on its brand new soccer field Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. against La Salle.
