LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior goalkeeper Adam Edwards tallied his fourth shutout of the year, but the Bucknell offense could not find the back of the net as the Bison and La Salle played to a 0-0 tie in men's soccer action Wednesday night in the first game for Bucknell at the new Varsity Soccer Field.
The Bison (3-1-1) dominated the time of possession as they fired 18 shots, including 10 in the second half, compared to La Salle's eight. Bucknell also tallied 10 corner kicks to the Explorers' two, but could not convert.
With the shutout, Edwards, the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, made it four in five tries this year. However, this was his easiest as La Salle (1-3-1) only attempted two shots on goal and he was called upon to make just one save. Edwards now has 22 career shutouts to rank him second to Ted Peterson's Bucknell standard of 24.
La Salle's goalkeeper, freshman Danny Pfieffer, made his first career start and picked up his first career shutout by making seven saves as Bucknell had 11 different players attempt at least one shot.
The Bison did have a number of good scoring opportunities, but could not convert. Just over 10 minutes into the first half Eric Brunton attempted a header from in front of the goal that sailed high for Bucknell's best scoring chance before halftime. In the second half he attempted a free kick that was deflected by Pfeiffer and rolled to Andrew Loia. Loia fired a shot from the left side, but it went into the net on the outside of the goal.
With about 13 minutes left in regulation the Bison had their best scoring chance when after a corner kick, Matt Hittson attempted his only shot of the game. Pfieffer turned it aside, but it went right to Loia again. Loia fired another line drive that Pfieffer dived to his right to swat away.
Neither team had a great scoring chance in overtime, but Ryan Moseley did force Edwards to make his first save of the night when he kicked a line drive from the edge of the box that landed in Edwards' hands. It was the only save for either goalie during overtime.
Bucknell returns to action at home Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. against St. Peter's. The Peacocks won their first game of the year Wednesday, defeating Quinnipiac 4-2.
