WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Jennifer Devarics netted the first goal of her collegiate career, but the tally would not be enough to hold off Georgetown as Bucknell fell to the Hoyas, 3-1 in women's soccer action at North Kehoe Field on Saturday to spoil the debut of first-year head coach Ben Landis.
Devarics' goal came at the 47:49 mark as she received a feed from senior Suzanne Arata to tie the score at one. Georgetown had taken a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the first half after capitalizing on a corner kick by Sara Jordan for her first tally of the season.
However, the Hoyas managed to net two unanswered goals in the second half to come away with the victory. Jordan sent a cross to Elaina Filauro who was open in the box and directed the ball past Bison netminder Katie Dry for the eventual game-winning goal 68:54 into the contest. Georgetown later added its third and final tally of the afternoon at the 75:30 mark as the ball was served in to Alexandra Hardy who was able to send it home from three yards out.
The Hoyas outshot Bucknell, 19-5, and led in corners by a 6-3 margin. Dry made six saves for the Bison while Jade Higgins stopped one shot in net for Georgetown. Fouls were even at 11 apiece.
Bucknell returns to action on Tuesday, Aug. 30, when the Bison will make their 2005 home debut at 4 p.m. against Howard.
