LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bison field hockey team opened up the 2005 season with a 2-1 loss, in overtime, at the hands of the Vermont Catamounts on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.
Bucknell started off the match slow and was outshot in the first period 14-1, but senior goalkeeper Liz Jordan played tough between the posts, allowing just one goal and recording eight saves. Vermont led 1-0 at the half on a goal by Kari Furlani just over three minutes into the contest.
The momentum switched in the second half and the Bison picked up their intensity and outshot the Catamounts 14-9. Freshman Amanda Faust, assisted by juniors Anne Lutz and Alex Kyzmir scored the Bison's lone goal on a penalty corner at the 44:44 mark.
With six minutes left in the second half, junior Callista Costopoulos thought she scored the go-ahead goal off a penalty corner, but the officials waived it off due to a Bison infraction.
Six minutes into overtime, Vermont shot a bullet towards Bucknell's goal off a penalty corner, but Jordan came through for the Bison with an amazing diving stick save. Jordan, a two-time All-Patriot League goalie, finished the day with 16 saves.
Unfortunately, luck ran out for the Bison after 75:52 minutes of play, as Vermont's Katie Flynn scored off her own rebound from a penalty corner.
Bucknell returns to action on Tuesday, Aug. 30, when it travels to Philadelphia to battle the Drexel Dragons at 4 p.m.
