LEWISBURG, Pa. - Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) has been named the ECAC Division I Field Athlete of the Week, announced by conference offices on Tuesday. The sophomore finished third in the "Championship" pole vault competition last week at the prestigious Penn Relays, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Buczko, who also earned ECAC honors during the week of April 4, cleared an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 12-9 ½, to place third in an elite field, including several all-americans and top competitors on the national scene. She also garnered Patriot League Field Athlete of Week honors for her efforts. Buczko holds the school record in the event, setting the standard at 13-3 ½.
The sophomore is just the second Bison athlete to hit a regional standard this season, as teammate Beverly Rogers has already qualified in the javelin. Buczko and Rogers have led the charge of Bison weekly award winners this spring, each receiving PL and ECAC recognition on two occasions.
Buczko and company will vie for their third PL outdoor title in the last four years this weekend at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, hosted by Lafayette in Easton, Pa. Buczko won a silver medal in the competition last year, and went on to finish 11th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She has the highest mark of any PL athlete going into the championships this season.
