LEWISBURG, Pa. - After suffering a 11-7 loss in game one, the Bison baseball team stormed back slamming 18 hits in game two, defeating St. Bonaventure 13-2, Thursday at Depew Field. Matt Capece and Jason Buursma led the Bison at the plate with four hits apiece, both smacking three in the second game. Freshman Matt Wilson got his first career win, allowing only four hits and one run in five innings of work.
With the score tied at 1-1 in game two, the Bison got their bats moving in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs. Capece and Kyle Walter started the charge with back-to-back singles. Brian Day hit for the third-straight single scoring Capece. Jason Buursma plated Walter and Day with a three-run blast over the right field wall. Chris Brannan kept the inning alive with a double through the left side. Brannan scored the fifth run of the inning on a single by Ryan Gryzskevicz, making the score 6-1.
The Bison onslaught continued in the fourth inning as four more Bucknell runners crossed the plate. Evan Weiss, Capece, Walter and Brannan would all score in the inning. Phil Bunting highlighted the frame with an RBI double down the left field line.
Bucknell did not let up in the fifth inning, scoring another three runs. Brad Duvall and Weiss both scored on a triple by Matt Capece. Buursma picked up another RBI with a single to left field. The freshman had a game high five RBI in the contest.
With the score knotted at 2-2 after a two RBI triple by Brad Duvall in game one, the Bison took the early lead scoring three runs in the bottom of third. Capece was the first to score, coming around on a Walter double to left center. Day would score on a balk by Bonnie hurler Matt Agonstinelli. Buursma scored the final run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Austin Turban.
The Bonnies came charging back with one run in the top of the fifth followed by a monster seven-run sixth inning. The big play of the at-bat was a two-run homer from the bat of St. Bonaventure's Joe Rizzo. The Bonnies would score another run in the top of the seventh, bringing their total to 11 runs.
The Bison looked as though they were going to threaten in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on back-to-back homeruns by Walter and Day, the second of the season for Walter, the first of the year for Day. The blasts brought the tally to the final score of 11-7.
Bucknell, which is 6-15 on the season, gets back on the Patriot League track this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders versus Lehigh. The games will begin at 12 p.m. on both April 9 and 10 in Bethlehem, Pa.
