Bison Lose First Game to Lehigh 7-6, Storm Back with 14-1 Win in Game Two

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Brian Day smashed two homeruns as Tim Peacock went the distance, pitching all nine innings of game two on Saturday, as the Bucknell baseball team split the first of two doubleheaders against Patriot League foe Lehigh, in Bethlehem, Pa. The Bison took a tough 7-6 loss in the first game, but stormed back in game two, pounding the Mountain Hawks, 14-1.
The Bison, now 7-16, 3-3 PL, smacked 21 hits in game two, the most of the season in a single game. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, Ryan Gryskevicz slammed a solo homerun, his second of the season, to give the Bison the lead. The Orange and Blue put another run on the board in the inning as Evan Weiss singled home Phil Bunting.
The Bison blew the game open in the top of the sixth tallying four more runs, highlighted by a three-run homer by Kyle Walter, his third round tripper of the year. Brad Duvall, who had reached base with a double, scored the first run of the inning, crossing the plate after a bunt by Matt Capece.
Bucknell would put seven more runs on the board, including three-run innings in the eighth and ninth. Duvall doubled with the bases loaded in the eighth, scoring Jason Buursma and Chris Brannan. Bunting would also come around to score on the play due to an error by Lehigh right fielder Nick Bet.
Walter led off the ninth with a double to right field followed by a two-run homer by Day. Brannan came up next and made it three extra base hits in-a-row, doubling to right field. Brannan would also score, coming around on a single by Gryzskevicz.
Peacock got his first win of the season, moving to 1-3 on the year. The senior had a stellar day on the mound, giving up nine hits and only one run. Joe Matteo took the loss for Lehigh, giving up 10 hits and five runs in five innings. With the loss, Lehigh is now 14-12-1, 3-3 in the Patriot League.
The Bison were lethal at the plate with Day and Gryskevicz leading the way with four hits apiece. Walter and Weiss each contributed three base knocks. Day and Walter each added three RBI.
Lehigh mounted a five-run comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, to win 7-6. Nathan Mittag gave up only three runs in six innings of work, but the Mountain Hawks pounded Ian Rainey, who eventually took the loss, falling to 1-1, for four hits and four runs when he took the mound in the seventh.
Jake Moss took the mound in a big time jam, and would walk the only two batters he faced, the second forced in the winning run. Lehigh's Jed Davitt got the win to improve to 1-1.
Things looked good early for the Bison, with Day launching a two-run blast in the top of the first. Lehigh would score two runs of its own in the inning but Bucknell answered with another run in the top of the second. Buursma would score the only run of the inning on a single by Duvall.
Gryskevicz scored in the fourth, after hitting a double to left field. The Bison put two more insurance runs on the board in the fifth making the score 6-2. Walter scored the first run of the inning as Gryskevicz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Brannan would score under the same circumstances, as Bunting got beaned.
The Bison continue their Patriot League series with another doubleheader in Bethlehem tomorrow. The first pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m., with game two to follow.
