BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After splitting yesterday's doubleheader against Lehigh, the Bison baseball team lost both games of Sunday's double-dip, losing to the Mountain Hawks 2-1 in game one, and 9-4 in the second game. The Bison fall to 7-18, 3-5 PL on the year while Lehigh moves to 15-12-1, 5-3 PL.
Matt Curry fell to 2-4 on the year after six stellar innings on the mound in game one. Curry gave up only four hits in the game while allowing two earned runs. Lehigh's Kyle Collina (3-4) also gave an excellent pitching performance to get the win, throwing all seven innings, allowing only six Bison hits and one earned run.
Game one remained scoreless until Lehigh scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth. Bucknell answered in the top of the sixth as Phil Bunting led off the inning with a single to left field. Bunting advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brad Duvall, and proceeded to third on a single by Evan Weiss. Bunting would score to knot the game at 1-1, as Matt Capece hit into a fielder's choice as Lehigh tagged Weiss out at second.
Liam O'Connor was the hero of the game for Lehigh, hitting a triple in the bottom of the sixth to plate the go-ahead run. The Bison couldn't get anything going in the top of the seventh, falling 2-1. Weiss and Chris Brannan led the Bison at the plate in game one, both recording 2-for-3 performances.
Lehigh's second inning rally would spell doom for the Bison in game two, as the Mountain Hawks scored seven runs on just three hits, and three Bison errors. Bucknell would get on the board in the top of the third, as Kyle Walter launched a homerun over the left field wall, his second homer in as many days.
The Bison put together a three-run rally in the top of the six, but it wouldn't be enough as Lehigh had put two more insurance runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Brian Day, who reached on a double, would be the first to score in the inning, crossing the plate on a single by Ryan Gryskevicz. Gryskevicz and Jason Buursma would score the final two runs of the inning on a Bunting double to right center.
Marc Cussatt took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season. Lehigh's Joe Raniszewski got the win to remain perfect at 3-0. Walter had a phenomenal game at the plate, going 5-for-5. Jason Buursma also had a good game, adding three hits.
The Bison will take on Susquehanna on Wednesday, Apr. 13, in a midweek matchup. The game is set for 3:30 p.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
