LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Ty Lagoni was named the Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week and sophomore Bryce Mitchell was named the Pitcher of the Week after the Bison went 5-0 last week. The Bison have won 10 of their last 11 games and are 8-1 to start Patriot League play.
Â
Bucknell defeated Mount St. Mary's 7-6 on Tuesday before a big 9-0 shutout over Penn State on Wednesday. The Bison then swept Lehigh over the weekend to start 8-1 in the Patriot League. The 8-1 start is Bucknell's best start to conference play since the Bison started the season 9-0 under Hall of Fame head coach Gene Depew.
Â
Lagoni is the Patriot League Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks after another stellar stretch by the transfer. Mitchell earned his first Pitcher of the Week honor after earning his first and second career wins against The Mount and the Mountain Hawks.
Â
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native hit .333 (7-for-21) with eight RBIs, two walks, and two runs scored over the five games. Lagoni hit .417 (5-for-12) with six RBIs and four runs scored in the series against Lehigh.
Â
He was 1-for-4 against Mount St. Mary's with two RBIs and a walk. His two-run single in the seventh gave the Bison a 5-4 lead as the Bison pulled to a 7-6 win. He then went 1-for-5 at the plate in the win over Penn State.
Â
Against Lehigh, opened the series 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. He came home on a squeeze bunt to tie the game 1-1 in the sixth. In game two, Lagoni was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a stolen base. Lagoni had Bucknell's first two RBIs of the game on a sac fly in the first and an RBI double in the third.
Â
Lagoni had a big game three going 2-for-6 with four RBIs as the Bison won 12-11 on a walk off and overcame a five-run deficit. His two-run triple in the first inning tied the game 2-2 before the Bison put up four more. He then tied the game again in the sixth 11-11 with a two-run single.
Â
Mitchell earned his first two career wins over Mount St. Mary's and Lehigh as the sophomore tossed eight innings over three relief appearances for the Bison. His final line from the week was 8.0 innings pitched, two hits, three runs (one unearned), six strikeouts, and one walk. Â
Â
The Damascus, Maryland native entered the game against The Mount in the fifth with two on and no outs. He forced two groundballs for fielder's choice, with the second out coming at home plate. He then fanned a batter to escape the jam. He allowed a homer, but it was the only hit he allowed. A Bison error put a runner on base, who then came to score on a double play.
Â
He then then tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning in game two against Lehigh to shut down the Mountain Hawks in a 6-3 win.
Â
Mitchell's second win of the week game in Bucknell's 12-11 walk off win in game three over Lehigh. Mitchell entered the game with two runners on. He allowed a home run to Owen Walewander, who homered twice in the game, but did not allow another hit as he closed out the final four innings. He struck out four batters, including Walewander in the eighth.
