Art Gulden Memorial Dedication Events to Take Place on Saturday

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation will be holding a memorial dedication ceremony this weekend to remember the late legendary Bucknell cross country and track and field coach Art Gulden. An elegant cast-stone monument depicting Coach Gulden will be placed outside Gerhard Fieldhouse and will be officially unveiled on Saturday, April 23. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Following the ceremony, all alumni and friends are invited to join the Gulden family for breakfast in Larison Dining Hall. The cost of the event is $5.00, payable at the door.
Gulden was at the helm of the Bison cross country and track and field program for 31 years. During his tenure, A 1964 graduate of Rutgers University, Gulden brought Bucknell's cross country and track and field program to a level of national prominence and league dominance, winning an unprecedented 68 league titles during his illustrious career. He was also named the Patriot League Coach of the Year an unbelievable 20 times. Gulden passed away in May of 2001.
Gulden's men's cross country teams, arguably Bucknell's most nationally accomplished program, won 18 straight conference titles from 1975-1992. At one point, his teams posted 167-consecutive dual meet wins, a streak spanning 16 years. He sent men's teams to the NCAA Cross Country Championships nine times in the last 21 years of his career and also saw the women receive an at-large selection to the NCAA meet in 1999 for the first time in school history.
The current Bison track and field teams are set to host the Bucknell Five-Way this weekend at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Teams participating in the competition will be Bucknell, Duquesne, Lock Haven, Robert Morris, Rhode Island (men), and Colgate (women). Field events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., with track events starting at 12 p.m.
