Navy Invitational -- Final Results
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Charlie Waddell was one of only four players in the field to shoot even par or better on Sunday, leading Bucknell's men's golf team to a tie for fifth place at the Navy Invitational. Waddell's level-par 71 was 10 strokes better than his first-round score and was one of four scorecards in the 70s for the Bison on Sunday.
Bucknell shot 303 as a team in the second and final round, two better than its opening-round total. Division III power Guilford won the event with a 594 total, five shots clear of runner-up George Washington. St. Bonaventure was third at 605, Boston College fourth at 606 and Bucknell and Loyola tied for fifth at 608. Host Navy was one behind the Bison at 609, while Temple (612), Villanova (614) and Millersville (614) rounded out the top 10 in a 20-team field.
Keita Aoki shot 75 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 17th place, tops among the Bison quintet. Aoki's 151 composite was one better than Waddell, who tied for 23rd place. Kyle Moran, Bucknell's first-round leader with a 74, shot 79 on the second 18 and tied for 30th. Also for the Bison on Sunday, Tom Lane carded a 78 and Ben Pellicani 83.
Billy Mullen of Temple shot his second straight 1-under 70 to claim the individual title by two strokes over Guilford's Colin Clark.
Lehigh's John Jaravita (68), Mullen, St. Bonaventure's Josh Anderson (71) and Waddell were the only competitors in the 105-player field to crack par on Sunday at the tricky U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club.
Bucknell posted the best finish among the four Patriot League teams in the field. In addition to besting the host Midshipmen by one shot, the Bison finished ahead of Lehigh (622) and Lafayette (631), who placed 15th and 16th, respectively.
Bucknell hosts the Patriot League Tournament next Saturday at the Bucknell Golf Club. The eight league teams are scheduled to play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.
