CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Kirk Klett recorded his second straight four-goal game to open the season, but Bucknell couldn't overcome a difficult second period and fell to Harvard 12-9 on Saturday afternoon. Zach Widbin tallied three goals for the Crimson, who used a 9-0 run midway through the contest to claim their season opener.
The Bison, coming off a season-opening 11-3 win over Marist, also received two goals each from Chris Cara and Patrick Christensen, as well as one goal and two assists from Steve Case.
Klett's second goal of the day, coming of one of John Salvesen's two assists, gave Bucknell a 4-2 lead just over a minute into the second period. But the Bison would not score again until the final three minutes of the third quarter as Harvard pocketed nine goals in a row.
Sean Kane tied the game at the 11:44 mark of the second quarter and Widbin put the Crimson ahead to stay two minutes later. Leading 8-4 at the half, Carle Stenmark registered a man-up goal to open the second-half scoring, and Jake Samuelson and Brian Mahler tacked on two more to make it 11-4 with 6:01 left in the third.
Bucknell mounted a spirited comeback, scoring four straight goals to pull within 11-8. Klett, Christiansen and Cara all tallied in the final 2:57 of the third quarter, and Case scored 3:22 into the fourth. Evan Calvert pocketed Harvard's third EMO goal of the day midway through the final period to stem the tide. Klett finished up the scoring with his fourth of the day and eighth of the season with 1:06 left.
Matt Baran made 16 saves for the Bison, who were outshot 41-35. Evan O'Donnell stopped 10 shots for Harvard, seven coming in the second half.
Bucknell won the ground ball battle 35-30 and split 11 of the 22 faceoffs. Freshman Tommy Moore notched his first collegiate point with an assist on Christensen's first-period goal.
The Bison play their next three games at home, including two games against top 10 teams in Navy and Maryland. Bucknell hosts Navy next Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
