Bison Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Marjorie Grap won two events as Christa Sawko, Catherine Trentacoste, Angie McFarland and Beverly Rogers each won one competiton, Saturday at the Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa. Saturday's meet was the first outdoor competition for the Bison track and field squads.
Grap earned a win in the shot put with a heave of 43 feet, 10 inches, a new Susquehanna stadium record. Grap got her second victory of the day in the hammer throw, tossing a distance of 168-01, the fourth-best mark in the Bison record books. Liz Pendleton was second in the hammer with a mark of 153-11.
Also in the throws, Rogers heaved a distance of 145-3 for the win in the javelin. The mark is the second-best in Bison history as well as a NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Angie McFarland continued the Bison domination of the throwing events, besting the discus field with a toss of 131-2. Teammate Amanda Mockbee followed in second with a distance of 129-5.
Trentacoste had a stellar day in the hurdles, earning the victory in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, clocking a 1:04.36. Kat Allen followed in second in 1:05.61. Trentacoste took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.47.
In the distances, Christa Sawko outlasted the 10,000-meter field, clocking a time of 38:31.00 for the win. Also on the track, Jenny Stevens took runner-up honors in the 1,500-meters, crossing the finish line in 4:51.11.
In men's action, Matt Forys and Dan Frake were the highest finishers for the Bison, each pulling in second-place honors. Forys finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:33.51 with teammate Kevin Brown following in third in 9:40.11.
Frake made a solid showing in the throws, finishing second in the hammer with a toss of 162-9. Frake also recorded a third place effort in the discus (135-00) and a fourth place finish in the shot put (44-7). Elsewhere in the field, Andre Campbell was also a top-five finish with a fourth place effort in the triple jump (43-00.25).
Matt Corbetta was the highest finisher in the sprinting events, crossing the finish line in fifth in the 200-meters in 23.27. Matt Johnson pulled in a sixth place finish in the 100-meters in 11.52 while Ryan Whitfield, another sixth place finisher, clocked a time of 58.19 in the 400 hurdles.
Outside of Selinsgrove, Bison Katie Pfeifer and Dan Lounsbury competed in the 10,000 at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., last evening. Pfeifer finished eighth in 36:59.53 while Lounsbury placed 23rd in the men's field in 31:13.15.
Next up for the Bison is the Jim Thorpe Invitational, April 2, in University Park, Pa. The action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
