ELBERTON, Ga. - The Bucknell women's rowing team opened its 2005 spring season Saturday against Dayton. The Bison won two of four races against the Flyers as the varsity four and novice eight boats won their races.
Bucknell's varsity four boat of coxswain-Jessica Scott, 4-Susan Shadle, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Jennifer Prunoske and 1-Courtney Luzzi fell behind Dayton by a boat length early in the race, but came back to win by five lengths in the seven-minute competition. In each of the four races the crews raced for seven minutes instead of racing a distance and registering a time.
"I was really impressed to see the varsity four battle back after falling behind early in the race," said head coach Stephen Kish.
The first novice eight boat posted Bucknell's other victory, winning by two lengths. The boat consisted of coxswain-Hope Heffner, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Amanda Gallina, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Jenna Kotyk, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Sophie Bird.
"The women started aggressively and pushed themselves to the very last stroke," commented head novice coach Katie Davis about the first novice eight win. "The excitement and determination they displayed is fun to see in a novice crew."
The second novice eight also posted a strong showing, but came up two lengths short to the Flyers. Coxswain-Antoinette Klatzky, 8-Katie Abbot, 7-Amy Van Nostrand, 6-Colleen McKeown, 5-Kelly Walker, 4-Gillian Young, 3-Kimin Fox, 2-Lauren Bolcar and 1-Jayne Kubat put forth the strong showing.
"The second varsity eight did a great job in their first race of the season," praised assistant coach Vi Ngo. "There is a lot of potential in the boat and it will be exciting to see how the women develop throughout the spring."
The other varsity boat for the Bison, the varsity eight, struggled with rough water early in its race and lost by five lengths. Members of the boat included coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Danielle Monteverde, 7-Jessica Noonan, 6-Lauren Olsen, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Lauren Ewald, 3-Kara Schroepfer, 2-Alexis Will and 1-Erin Henry.
"I told the women I thought their performance was good for a first race," said Kish. "We have five weeks to prepare for the Patriot League Championships and I know they will be hungry to use each day."
The Bison, who will compete every weekend through the end of April, are back in action at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, Pa., Saturday, March 26. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
