TROXELVILLE, Pa. - In its first dual race of the spring season, the Bucknell rowing team had an impressive showing against Army, claiming three of the four races Saturday at Walker Lake. Both Bucknell's varsity four and varsity eight crews were victorious, while the second novice eight beat out both Army's second varsity eight and second novice eight.
Each of the races, which were moved from the Susquehanna River to Walker Lake because of flood warnings, were seven minutes instead of the normal 2,000 meters.
"Our athletes have had a tough week because of the recent flooding," commented Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "I was impressed with the focus our women had given our minimal race preparation."
The varsity eight, which edged out Army by two lengths, included coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Danielle Monteverde, 7-Jessica Noonan, 6-Alexis Will, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Lauren Ewald, 3-Kara Schroepfer, 2-Lauren Olsen and 1-Erin Henry.
The varsity four easily beat Army and was composed of coxswain-Jessica Scott, 4-Susan Shadle, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Jennifer Prunoske and 1-Courtney Luzzi.
Bucknell's second novice eight, which defeated Army's second varsity eight by two seats, had a solid race. The Bison second novice eight, which consisted of, coxswain-Antoinette Klatzky, 8-Katie Abbot, 7-Amy Van Nostrand, 6-Colleen McKeown, 5-Kelly Walker, 4-Gillian Young, 3-Kimin Fox, 2-Lauren Bolcar and 1-Jayne Kubat, also defeated Army's second novice eight by even more, crossing the line six seats ahead.
"I was impressed at the second novice eight's victory," said assistant coach Vi Ngo. "Beating a varsity crew is a big accomplishment."
The novice eight was Bucknell's only boat not to win its race, but it lost to Army by just two lengths and closed the gap at the end of seven-minute race. The members of the novice eight boat were coxswain-Hope Heffner, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Amanda Gallina, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Jenna Kotyk, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Sophie Bird.
"The whole morning was crazy with the amount of rain we got," explained head novice coach Katie Davis. "The novice eight rowed tough, we just did not come together like we are capable of."
Bucknell hits the road again next weekend when it travels to Buffalo, N.Y., to face Colgate and Buffalo. Competition is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
