LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell built a pair of 13-point leads, including one early in the second half, but Lafayette used a 48-point second half to post a 68-62 come-from-behind win over the Bison in women's basketball Friday night at Sojka Pavilion.
Bucknell (7-14, 1-7 Patriot League) held the Leopards (4-17, 2-6 PL) without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes as it went on a 15-2 run to build its first 13-point lead late in the first half. A basket by Emilie Barruet with 1:52 on the clock gave the Bison their largest lead of the game to that point at 28-15. Just 22 seconds later Naida Dupovac ended Lafayette's 9:44 streak without a field goal.
Kristina Collymore and Lindsey Hollobaugh keyed Bucknell's 15-2 spurt. Collymore got things started by converting a three-point play which Hollobaugh followed by scoring six consecutive points. She finished the game with a game-high 19 points on 7 of 12 shooting. Baskets by Collymore, Hope Foster and Barruet closed the eight-minute spurt.
After leading 29-20 at halftime, Hollobaugh helped the Bison to their second 13-point lead by tallying the first four points of the second half for Bucknell. Less than a minute after Hollobaugh scored to give the Bison a 33-23 advantage, Lindsey Geosits made a 3-pointer from the right corner to put Bucknell up 36-23. Lafayette quickly answered with a 3-pointer by Kristin Doherty, who led three Leopards in double figures with 13 points, on its next possession. That bucket ignited a 15-6 run that narrowed Bucknell's lead to 42-38 with 13:34 remaining.
The Bison were able to cling to their lead until Doherty knocked down a pair of free throws five minutes later to give Lafayette a 49-48 advantage, its first since leading 7-6 in the opening minutes of the game. The Leopards allowed Bucknell to draw even at 49-49, but never relinquished the lead back to the Bison.
Bucknell kept the score within four points until Doherty hit her third 3-pointer of the game with just under a minute to play to give Lafayette a 66-60 advantage. Hollobaugh cut the lead down to 66-62 with a jumper with 31 seconds left, but Lindsay Myers, who had 10 points, and Kara Stetler, who finished with 12 points, each converted a free throw in the final seconds to seal the victory for Lafayette.
Bucknell opened up its nine-point halftime lead by forcing 15 turnovers in the first half, and collecting 10 steals. However, in the second half the Bison forced just six turnovers and added only three steals to their tally. Geosits led the way with five steals, three in the first half, while Kesha Champion recorded all three of her steals in the first half.
Along with not forcing turnovers in the second half, Bucknell allowed Lafayette to shoot much better in the second 20 minutes of play. The Leopards were shooting just 29.6 percent at halftime, but made 16 of 28 from the field in the second half to finish the game at 43.6 percent. The Bison, who shot 41.4 percent in the first half, made 42.9 percent for the game. It marked the first time in four games they eclipsed the 40 percent mark.
Bucknell was outrebounded for the fifth time in the last six games as Lafayette won the battle of the boards 37-34. Rachel Hanley, who joined Hollobaugh in double figures with 12 points, led the way for the Bison with eight rebounds. Hollobaugh added six, while Hope Foster collected five. Tricia Indoe gathered eight rebounds, six of the offensive variety, to lead the Leopards.
After losing to Lafayette earlier this year in Easton, Bucknell dropped the season series to the Leopards for the first time since the 1993-94 campaign.
Bucknell wraps up its season-high four-game homestand Sunday afternoon when it hosts Lehigh at 2 p.m. The Bison fell to the second-place Mountain Hawks 52-44 two weeks ago on the road.
