HAMILTON, N.Y. - Emily Braseth scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Colgate to an 84-66 victory over Bucknell in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court. The Bison, who's defense gave up a season-high 84 points, wrapped up the regular season 10-17 overall, 4-10 in the Patriot League to finish seventh final league standings by virtue of Lehigh defeating Lafayette 74-43 Saturday night.
The Bison gave up a season-high 46 points to Colgate (10-17, 6-8) in the first half as the Raiders built a 46-32 halftime advantage. After falling behind 9-4 in the opening minutes of the fast-paced first half, the Bison strung together an 8-0 run keyed by six points from Brooke Tomovich, who registered 12 of her team-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes, to take a 12-9 lead with 14:28 to play. Colgate answered with a 13-2 run of its own, highlighted by a short jumper and a 3-pointer by Molly Patterson less than 25 seconds apart, to open a 22-14 lead. Colgate didn't let Bucknell draw closer than six points the rest of the half.
Braseth, who was one of eight Raiders to score in the first half, tallied 15 points before intermission, including six of Colgate's final eight of the half. Bucknell's 14-point deficit at halftime was its largest of the first half as Braseth scored with six seconds on the clock.
The second half continued to feature up-tempo basketball as Colgate put another 38 points on the scoreboard. Bucknell added 34 to its total, but could draw no closer than 11 points at 51-40 with 16:39 left after a jumper by Lindsey Hollobaugh. Hollobaugh was held to just nine points, marking just the ninth time in her career that she did not reach double figures.
Colgate, which shot 47.9 percent (35 of 73) against a Bison defense that was leading the Patriot League in field goal percentage defense, extended its advantage to a game-high 21 points (77-56) with 4:30 left after a 3-pointer by Allison Lipinski. Lipinski, one of four Raiders in double figures, registered 16 points. Leandra Fuller and Molly Patterson each tallied 10 to round out the quartet of Colgate players with at least 10 points.
Bucknell, which converted 27 of 59 field goals (45.8 percent), also had four players reach double figures. Joining Tomovich with at least 10 points were Kristina Collymore (career-high 14), Hope Foster (12) and Kesha Champion (10).
Bucknell which faced a 24-16 rebounding deficit at halftime, was even on the boards in the second half with Colgate as the final tally was 43-35. Hollobaugh and Foster tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece. Colgate dominated the offensive glass with 23 offensive rebounds, including seven from Braseth.
Bucknell, the seventh seed, will face Lehigh, the second seed, in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament on the Mountain Hawks' home floor in Stabler Arena Thursday night, March 3. The Bison will take on Lehigh at 8 p.m. Immediately preceding that game will be third-seeded Army and sixth-seeded Colgate squaring off.
