Bison Men's Track and Field in Fifth Place After Day Two of the PL Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Marjorie Grap and Kayla Halloran earned gold medals on Saturday as the Bison women's track and field team remained in first place after two days of competition at the Patriot League Championships in Bethlehem, Pa. Mike Mellas finished second in the men's heptathlon to propel the Bison men to fifth place in the team standings with one day of competition remaining.
The Bison women gave performance that was nothing less than spectacular in the 20-pound weight throw taking first, second, third, fifth and sixth places, five of the six scoring positions. Grap won the weight with a heave a 55-0 for her first career PL gold medal. Liz Pendleton grabbed the silver medal with a personal-best toss of 51-10, followed by Angie McFarland in third place with a mark of 50-1/2. Gwen Soult (47-7) and Amanda Mockbee (47-6 ¼) rounded out the Bison onslaught in fifth and sixth places.
Halloran clocked a time of 17:32.89 in the 5,000-meters for her first career PL gold. Katie Pfeifer also scored in the 5,000 finishing in fifth place in 18:15.01. Also on the track, the team of Lauren Bricker, Jen Marsh, Amy Calvo and Christa Sawko took the silver medal in the 4x800-meter relay in 9:10.58.
Tolu Fayanjuola was a big factor for the Bison in the jumping events taking second in the long jump and third in the high jump. Fayanjuola jumped an indoor personal-best of 19-0 ½ in the long jump and cleared a height of 5-3 in the high jump to tie for third. The Bison women have 80 points after two days, 42 points ahead of Lehigh in second place.
Mellas finished second in the heptathlon with 4,634 points to earn eight points toward the Bison total. Also adding big points were freshman Mike Contino and sophomore Tyler Palumbo in the long jump. Contino earned a bronze medal with a leap of 21-8. Palumbo followed in fourth place with a mark of 21-4 ¾.
The team of James Redmond, Faizal Asumda, Wallace Campbell and Koran Evans notched a scoring finish placing sixth in the 4x800 with a time of 8:00.42, a Bucknell season best. The Bison men have tallied 19 points after two days just two points behind fourth-place American. Army is the current leader in the men's competition with 66 points.
Competition continues tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with the women's pole vault. The 4x400-meter relay, the final event of the championships, is scheduled to go off at 4:50 p.m.
