ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Lindsey Hollobaugh scored a game-high 16 points, while Brooke Tomovich added 14, all in the second half, as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated Navy 65-58 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The victory was the second straight for the Bison and improved their record to 9-15 overall, 3-8 in the Patriot League. Hollobaugh and Tomovich combined to score the final 16 points of the game for Bucknell.
After playing a close first half where neither team led by more than six points, the second half remained tight until Bucknell went on an 8-2 run over a four-minute span to take a 57-49 lead with 6:44 left. Hollobaugh connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cap the run.
After the Mids crept to within 57-54 with five consecutive points, including a 3-pointer from Abi Campbell who was one of four Navy players in double figures with 12 points, Hollobaugh connected on another 3-pointer from the left corner that extended Bucknell's lead to 60-54 with 4:31 left.
The Bison had a five-point lead at 63-58 with less than a minute to play when Hollobaugh attempted a jumper from just outside the lane with the shot clock running down. She missed, but Tomovich dove on the floor to get the offensive rebound with 40 seconds remaining. The extra possession forced Navy to foul and sealed the victory for the Bison.
The Bison, who had freshmen score their first eight points of the game, and Mids, who outrebounded Bucknell 23-16 in the first half, played to an 8-8 tie through the game's first five minutes. Navy then went on a short 9-5 run to take a 17-13 advantage with 11:30 to play in the stanza after a basket by Kate Hobbs, who had 12 points in the contest, including nine in the first half.
On Bucknell's ensuing possession Rachel Hanley was fouled and made both free throws to start an 8-0 Bison run that turned into a 12-2 spurt. Hanley scored six of her eight points during the first two minutes of the stretch.
The Mids answered that run by outscoring Bucknell 8-2 over the next four minutes to knot the contest at 27-27 on a 3-pointer by Lauren Skrel. Lindsey Geosits answered with a 3-pointer of her own just 10 seconds later to give the Bison a 30-27 advantage with 4:47 remaining. Despite that being the last field goal of the half for Bucknell the Bison still went into the locker room tied at 33-33.
The key to the win for the Bison, who are in the middle of their second two-game winning streak of the season, was turning the ball over a season-low 11 times. That helped them overcome a 44-34 rebound deficit. Hollobaugh led the way with six boards. She also added a season high-tying seven assists.
After allowing Navy to shoot 41.9 percent in the first half, Bucknell held the Mids to just 30.0 percent shooting in the second half. The Bison shot 41.4 percent in the first half before upping that to 46.4 percent in the second half. Hollobaugh and Tomovich combined to make 13 of 24 from the field, and 3 of 4 from 3-point range. As a team, Bucknell made 5 of 9 from behind the arc. The Mids were just 5 of 17.
Bucknell returns home for its second-to-last home contest of the season Saturday night, Feb. 19, to face Army. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
