Bucknell Track and Field Completes First Meet of Indoor Season

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Both of Bucknell's men's and women's track and field teams completed competition at the Bison Opener, held all day on Saturday at the Gerhard Fieldhouse in Lewisburg, Pa. Freshmen Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) and Kevin Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) made their marks in the men's record books, while fellow newcomer Katie Dempsey (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) impacted the women's.
On the men's side, Boyle ran a time of one minute, 5.35 seconds, winning the 500-meter dash and becoming Bucknell's sixth-best finisher, while MacLeod finished tied for sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.68 seconds), to become the Bison's number four man.

Also finishing strong for the Orange and Blue was junior Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon), who finished second in the 3000 with a time of 8:51.80, while senior Matt Corbetta (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) finished sixth in the 200 (23.06) and eighth in the 400 (52.70). Whitfield finished tied with Corbetta in the 400.

"I was especially pleased with our men's team today," says head coach Kevin Donner. "We showed today that we are much better than the previous two years. Our field events guys really came through-especially in the throws. They are much improved."
For the women, Dempsey not only placed tied for fifth in the women's record books in the high jump (second overall, 5-5), but also earned the number-10 ranking with a leap of 17-10 1/4 in the long jump (seventh overall).
Junior Marjorie Grap shattered her former personal record and Bucknell's best record of 57-6 1/4 in the weight throw, with a first-place finish of 58-9 1/4, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships. She also made a strong fifth-place showing in the shot put (43-2 1/2).

Senior Danielle Todman (Scotch Plains, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) became the Bison's third-best finisher in the 60-H, with a personal best time of 9.15 in the preliminary meet, while junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./

Buczko won the pole vault competition with a leap of 11-9 3/4, but went onto record a final jump of 12-9.

"It was a very solid effort for our first meet of the year," said Donner. "The ladies showed great spirit and I am looking forward to another successful season."
