BALTIMORE, Md. - Lectie Altman (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) won the 200-yard backstroke and placed second in the 200 freestyle, along with taking part on the 400 medley relay squad to lead the Bucknell women's swimming team Saturday at UMBC Natatorium, but it wasn't enough as the Retrievers defeated the Bison 141-94.
Altman posted Bucknell's (2-1) lone victory of the meet by swimming the 200 back in 2 minutes, 5.57 seconds, nearly two full seconds ahead of UMBC's Amber Harris. Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) helped the Bison claim two of the top three spots by finishing third in 2:12.32.
Altman also had a hand in a pair of second-place showings. She placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.91. She also helped the 400 medley relay to second place as she swam the first leg for the squad that finished in 3:59.53, more than six seconds ahead of the third-place team from UMBC. Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), Mary Krakowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) teamed with Altman on the relay team.
In addition to the two second-place finishes Altman helped produce, Bucknell had three other second-place showings and nine other top-three finishes.
The 500 free featured the Bison sweeping the second through fourth positions with Meghan Brown (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) claiming second, Brittany Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y.) finishing third and Carlyn Donley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) taking fourth. Brown finished in 5:19.39.
The only other event in which Bucknell claimed two of the top three positions was the 400 free relay. Susan Horstman (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), Lauren Butrie (Orefield, Pa./Parkland), Lauren Reed (South Plainfield, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) and Alex Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn.) teamed up for the second-place finish in 3:42.33. Just over four seconds behind was the foursome of Krakowski, Neligan, Goeller and Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield).
Bucknell is idle until Jan. 7 when it takes on Western Kentucky and Providence in Ft. Myers, Fla.
