LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the first half and Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) tallied six consecutive points late in the second half to lead the Bucknell women's basketball team to a 54-48 victory over Siena. With their second consecutive win at home the Bison improved to 2-2. The Saints fell to 1-2 with the loss.
Hollobaugh dominated the first half with 16 points on 7 of 8 shooting as Bucknell opened up a 34-25 halftime lead. The Bison extended the lead out to a game-high 13 points (38-25) as Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) and Kristina Collymore (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) knocked down jumpers in the opening minutes of the second half. However, Collymore's basket with 18:15 to play was the last field goal for Bucknell for over six minutes as Siena reeled off 13 consecutive points to tie the game.
Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) ended the scoreless drought with her first of two critical 3-pointers in the game. She later hit one to give Bucknell a 52-46 lead with just under three minutes left. Those were her only two field goals, although she did dish out two assists in 24 minutes of play.
The Bison were unable to score for nearly five more minutes, although their defense, which forced 18 turnovers and limited the Saints to 34.5 percent shooting, yielded just three points in the interim. Champion keyed a 6-2 run that spanned four minutes by driving to the basket on a number of occasions. She scored all six points and drew two fouls during the run.
Brown's 3-pointer with just under three minutes gave the Bison a six-point lead, but did not seal the game as Siena closed the gap to 52-48 with 1:41 to play on a jumper by Whitney Cave, who led the Saints with 13 points and 11 rebounds. A Hollobaugh turnover with 50 seconds to play gave Siena a chance to close the gap, but it took more than 20 seconds to get a shot off. Hollobaugh, who led Bucknell with nine rebounds as she came up just short of her second double-double of the year, hauled in the carom, but traveled as she fell to the ground. Cave missed a short jumper on Siena's ensuing possession, but Talaya Wilkins grabbed the offensive rebound. She missed her shot and Collymore came away with her fifth rebound of the contest.
Hollobaugh then sealed the game with a pair of free throws with just over 10 seconds on the clock. They were her only points of the second half as she attempted only two field goals after halftime due to a tough Siena box-and one defense.
The first half was similar to the second half in that Bucknell jumped out to a 20-8 lead seven minutes into the game as Siena turned the ball over seven times in that span. The Saints did narrow their deficit to three points on four occasions, but Bucknell ended the half on an 8-2 run to take the nine-point advantage into the locker room.
After shooting 48.3 percent (14 of 29) in the first half, Bucknell cooled off to 33.3 percent (7 of 21) in the second half, but still shot 42.0 percent for the game. Siena was 10 of 29 (34.5 percent) in each half.
Siena won the rebounding battle 40-27 as eight players grabbed at least two rebounds. Just four Bison recorded rebounds with Foster, Ashton Sprouse (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) and Collymore each hauling in five to go along with Hollobaugh's nine.
Champion finished with 10 points and five assists, while Foster scored seven points and blocked five shots to go along with her five rebounds.
Laura Menty was the only other Siena player in double figures in points besides Cave and she scored 10 points highlighted by 4 of 6 shooting from the free throw line. She was the only Saint to go to the charity stripe.
Bucknell will aim for its third consecutive victory Sunday afternoon when it hosts Saint Joseph's at Sojka Pavilion at 1 p.m. It is the first time since 1996-97 the Bison will play regular season games on back-to-back days when neither game is part of a tournament.
