MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The doubles teams of Rheanna Gaskin (Gaithersburg, Md./Colonel zadok Magruder)/Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) and JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park)/Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the way for the Bucknell women's tennis team at West Virginia's Martha Thorn Invitational by advancing to the semifinals of Flight C. However, both duos fell one step short of the finals.
Gaskin and Baffa, who defeated Villanova's Daniella Phillis and Lindsey Puchyr, 9-8 (7-4), late Friday night to advance to the semifinals, fell to Carlie Smith and Kimberly Harclerode of Pittsburgh, 8-2, in the semifinals.
Gross and Simonetti won 8-4 over Toledo's Claire Smalley and Sarah Horning late Friday night to reach the semifinals. They lost there by the same 8-2 score as Gaskin and Baffa, falling to Ashley Constantine and Monica Lyskawa of host West Virginia.
Bucknell's entrant in Flight A, Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Colonel Zadok Magruder) and Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School), did not advance to Saturday's semifinals as it fell to Pittsburgh's Kristy Burza and Leah Friedman, 8-6, late Friday night.
With rain plaguing the weekend-long invitational by forcing competition indoors, the Bison did not compete in singles play.
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend, Oct. 14-16, when it hosts the Bucknell Invitational. Play begins Friday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m.
