HAMILTON, N.Y. - Sophomore Katie Leinen (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and senior Katie Watt (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) each scored her first goal of the season late in the second half to lead the Bucknell field hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Patriot League foe Colgate Saturday afternoon at Tyler's Field.
The Bison, who picked up their first Patriot League victory of the season to even their league mark at 1-1 and improved to 4-7 overall, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when freshman Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scored her third goal of the season on a penalty corner at the 4:52 mark. Anne Lutz (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) and Alex Kyzmir (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) were credited with assists on the goal. Kyzmir, who is tied for fourth on Bucknell's single-season assist list with seven helpers this year, stands third in the Patriot League in the same category. She also ranks fourth on the Bison career list with 16 assists.
Colgate, which was picked third in the Patriot League preseason poll, answered less than four minutes later when Amanda Gilmore netted her first goal of the season.
The score remained even at 1-1 until the Raiders pulled ahead with a goal off the stick of Dana Shaner with 3:24 left before halftime. The goal was scored off a penalty corner, the only one of the day for Colgate.
Colgate held its 2-1 lead until Watt found the back of the net at the 58:57 mark. It was her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
With less than five minutes remaining and the score tied 2-2, it appeared as though overtime was imminent. However, Leinen tallied the game-winning goal on a breakaway with 3:53 left in regulation.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Jordan (Towson, Md./St. Paul's School) made six saves for the Bison to eclipse the century mark for the season and bring her total to 105.
"It was a phenomenal effort by this team to win in a tough environment and in bad weather," commented Bucknell head coach Heather Lewis. "To fight from a 2-1 deficit to win in regulation is a credit to the work ethic of this team. It was a great win for us, and it shows the amount of heart and courage we have."
Bucknell, which had lost three straight games entering the contest, outshot Colgate 11-9, including 7-1 in the second half. The Bison also tallied four penalty corners, while the Raiders, who lost their seventh straight game after starting the season 5-1, had just one.
Bucknell will return to upstate New York Tuesday, Oct. 11, when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y., for a non-league matchup with Cornell. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
