PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bucknell women's rowing team wrapped up its 2005 fall competition season with a successful showing at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta Saturday. Both the varsity and novice crews had equally impressive performances with the varsity eight placing eighth out of 46 boats, while the novice program had two boats place in the top 10 in a field of 67.
"It was an exciting day," commented Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "It was the best showing we have ever had at the Head of the Schuylkill. It was especially impressive that two freshman/novice eights finished in the top 10. The only other programs to do that were Princeton and Columbia."
The varsity eight of coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Christine Drasba, 7-Sophie Bird, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Amanda Gallina, 2-Colleen McKeown and 1-Jenna Kotyk finished the course in 14 minutes, 54.53 seconds.
Bucknell entered a pair of boats in the open varsity quad event. The top boat of 4-Amanda Roof, 3-Jayne Kubat, 2-Erin Henry and 1-Amy Van Nostrand finished fourth in the seven-boat field with a time of 16:33.06. The other Bison entrant, which was 4-Gillian Young, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Lauren Bolcar and 1-Courtney Luzzi, took sixth in 16:55.72.
The Bison also had a lightweight single entrant to round out the list of varsity team members that competed Saturday. Jessica Glenn, a sophomore, placed 17th out of 18 in a time of 18:37.16.
The novice eight race, which consisted of 67 boats, featured seven Bucknell boats. The Bison eights took eighth, ninth, 22nd, 37th, 39th, 49th, and 56th.
"This is the largest novice program we have ever had," said Kish. "Racing seven freshman/novice eights, with five of them comprised of true 'novices', is really something else. Kate Strum is doing a great job in her first year as our head novice coach."
The first Bucknell boat to cross the line was coxswain-Lauren Ruddy, 8-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Whittney Henry, 6-Page Kannor, 5-Abby Neff, 4-Sarah Wohlman, 3-Katie London, 2-Drew Paolucci and 1-Renee Perry. That eight timed in at 15:09.52, 10 seconds ahead of the next Bison boat of coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, 8-Lindsey Harriss, 7-Cara Levy, 6-Lauren Comegys, 5-Allison Cutting, 4-Kelly Henkler, 3-Christa Budney, 2-Julia Martin and 1-Christina Kassab.
The next Bucknell novice boat of coxswain-Muarita Hewitt, 8-Gillian Carter, 7-Alexandra Ellis, 6-Elizabeth Mooney, 5-Jacqueline Theis, 4-Lauren Perez, 3-Julianne Curtis, 2-Victoria Cohen and 1-Emily Huber took 22nd with a time of 16:25.34.
The fourth and fifth Bison eights finished just five seconds apart. The boat of coxswain-Lisa Patel, 8-Jennifer Guempel, 7-Adrienne Jensen-Doray, 6-Laura Gestal, 5-Emily Applebaum, 4-Kelly McGaw, 3-Kelly Grimes, 2-Madeline Folkman and 1-Maggie Martin took 37th place in 17:19.11, while coxswain-Anna Latimer, 8-Kathryn Burke, 7-Katrina Dodd, 6-Lauren Gibbons, 5-Emily Heller, 4-Elizabeth Kendall, 3-Amanda Dearborn, 2-Erica Koff and 1-Rachel Roberts placed 39th with a time of 17:24.19.
Bucknell did have two more boats cross the finish line with the eight of coxswain-Meredith Chambers, 8-Megan Talbot, 7-Emily Rath, 6-Allison McKendry, 5-Deborah Perry, 4-Louise Giffin, 3-Emily Bostwick, 2-Katrina Spence and 1-Catherine Ender claiming 49th place in 18:33.11. The final Bison boat to finish was comprised of coxswain-Casey Bryant, 8-Alana Russo, 7-Stacey Allen, 6-Lisa Prasto, 5-Hilary Casper, 4-Talia Sauerhaft, 3-Maggie Haines, 2-Margaret Hartman and 1-Amy Gonzalez. That eight finished the course in 19:51.66.
"The novice women were awesome," exclaimed Strum. "It is a great group and they were very impressive in their first race of the year."
In addition to the current Bucknell women's rowing student-athletes that competed Saturday, a group of alumni from the program were in action in the open four event. They placed 11th out of 36 boats. The four alumni were stroke-Julie Engel '04, 3-Vi Ngo '04, 2-Lauren Ewald '05 and 1-Joan Wendler '04. It was the first-ever Bucknell alumni boat to compete at a race and was comprised of four Dad Vail Regatta gold medalists.
The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta completed Bucknell's brief fall schedule. The Bison will continue their competition schedule during their championship spring season, which features the Patriot League Championships, Dad Vail Regatta and IRA National Championships.
