LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team remained in the second place slot and clinched a berth in the Patriot League Tournament by defeating PL foe Lafayette, 5-1. The victory puts the Bison at 6-9 overall (3-1 PL) and pushes the Leopards to 7-8 overall (0-3 PL), with just one league game left to play. The last time Bucknell saw post-season action was in 2003 and the last time it finished with a PL above .500 was in 1998.
The Bison shot even with the Leopards in the first half at 10 shots apiece, but Lafayette could only fool senior goalkeeper Liz Jordan (Towson, Md./Bucknell) once, while the Orange and Blue were able to compile three goals.
Sophomore Katie Leinen (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) scored the first goal for Bucknell off an assist from junior Alex Kyzmir (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) just over 17 minutes into the game. Kyzmir, in what would be the game-winner, found the back of Lafayette's net all by herself, with less than five minutes to play in the half. The third score game off a penalty corner shot, after time had run out, by freshman Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), assisted by Kyzmir and Anne Lutz (Allentown, Pa./William Allen).
Lafayette's lone goal was scored by Kasey Gallagher, with 40 seconds left to play in the half.
Bucknell kept the Leopards scoreless for the remainder of the game, with Jordan recording six saves in the second half, as sophomore Lindsey Weller (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and senior Kelly O'Brien (Rye, N.Y./Rye) each contributed a goal.
Playing strong defense for the Bison once again was junior Heather Rogers (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) who recorded five interceptions and seven tackles.
Kyzmir currently sits tied for first in Bucknell's record books with 10 assists in a season and also ranks second among all Bison in career assists with 19.
Jordan currently has 142 saves with a save percentage of .793, ranking her as one of the best goalkeepers in the PL and in the nation.
Bucknell will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Towson in a non-league match-up at 6 p.m. The Bison will then travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to battle Lehigh for second place in the PL, before starting tournament play in November.
