LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team battled the cold and a very physical Towson team, but came out with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday evening at Graham Field, in Lewisburg, Pa. Sophomore Katie Leinen (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) was responsible for the goal that pushed the Bison ahead with 25 seconds left to play in the game.
The Tigers out shot Bucknell 10-5 in the first half, but senior goalkeeper Liz Jordan (Towson, Md./St. Paul's) was able to collect seven saves and keep Towson scoreless. The Orange and Blue was also left scoreless in the first half.
Just over 15 minutes into the second half, senior Kelly O'Brien (Rye, N.Y./Rye) scored the first goal of the game for the Bison off an unassisted drive. The Tigers answered O'Brien's goal as Laura Passalacqua found an open Erica Houck, who was able to push the ball past Jordan, to even the score at 1-1. Houck's goal would be the only Towson tally of the night as the Bucknell defense, led by Jordan and fellow senior Carli Cataldo (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks East), refused to let another slip through.
With 25 seconds left to play, Leinen pushed the ball past the Tiger's goalie to put the Bison ahead, 2-1. Time quickly ran out for Towson and the Orange and Blue was handed its seventh win of the season.
Jordan compiled 14 saves on the day and currently has 156 saves, with just 38 goals allowed. Offensively, O'Brien is second on the squad with six goals, while Leinen is tied for fifth with three goals, and tied for first in game winning goals (2).
The Bison (7-9 overall, 3-1 Patriot League) will end their regular season play in a battle for second place in the Patriot League against Lehigh on Saturday, at 1 p.m., in Bethlehem, Pa. Bucknell will then travel to Washington, D.C. on November 5 for the PL Tournament.
