UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team fell 6-0 to No. 6 Penn State early this evening in University Park, Pa., at Astroturf Field. Junior goalkeeper Emily Groendyke (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) recorded her season's best performance with eight saves for the Bison. The loss puts the Orange and Blue at 5-9 overall (2-1 Patriot League)
Bucknell played strong defense, led by junior Heather Rogers, (Wyoming, Del./Caeser Rodney) as it only allowed nine shots from the Nittany Lions in the first half. Unfortunately, four of the nine shots went through and found the back of the Bison net for scores. Bucknell was unable to spark an offense to minimize the 4-0 lead by the end of the first half.
Groendyke stepped in to the cage for Bucknell in the second half and made eight stops and allowed just two goals.
The Bison offense continued to struggle against the very strong Penn State Defense in the second half, leaving the Orange and Blue scoreless when the final horn signaled the end of the game.
Scoring twice for the Nittany Lions were Carey Maser and Ali Scola, who both scored once during each half. Maser scored the first and fifth Penn State goals, while Scola scored numbers four and six.
The Orange and Blue defense allowed 23 total Nittany Lions shots, 10 less than last at year's match-up.
Rogers, who turned in one of her strongest performances of the season today, currently ranks second among all Bucknell defenders with five defensive saves, which also ranks her among the top defenders in the PL.
Groendyke has seen action in four games this season and has 16 total saves, for a save percentage of .800.
Bucknell will be looking to extend its conference win streak to two games as it returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 22, while hosting the PL's Lafayette, at 1 p.m., at Graham Field.
