This rowing season has been awesome so far! Many people come in to college thinking they cannot fit team sports into their busy academic schedule, but surprisingly, athletics help academics! Not only has rowing created a regular, healthy schedule for me, but physical activity keeps my mind focused and lets me attack my academics with more enthusiasm.
I have been a part of competitive athletics from the age of 10, but rowing was new for me this year. I was surprised at how many novice women, unaccustomed to exercise or the early morning practices, really threw themselves into the team and have stuck with it despite the freezing 6 a.m. practices and sore muscles. The Miami Beach winter training camp showed me what a great group of girls I have found. Some of my best friendships were made on that trip, sharing boats, meals and tiny hotel rooms with my teammates. The team is really shaping up as a cohesive unit, and we are all getting excited for the upcoming racing season that will bring us out of the erg room and to the water we all love.
