WEST POINT, N.Y. - Four Bucknell players scored in double figures, led by Brooke Tomovich's 16, but the Bison, who trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half, fell short in their comeback bid as they lost to Army, 65-61, in women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena.
Bucknell (6-9, 1-2 Patriot League) used a 10-2 run midway through the second half to cut a 16-point deficit to eight. The run was capped by a pair of open court steals by Emilie Barruet and Kristina Collymore that led to four points and narrowed the score to 47-39 with just over 12 minutes to play.
The Black Knights (8-7, 2-1 Patriot League) extended the lead back to 14 points when Shavonne Holden, who tallied a game-high 19 points, scored six straight in less than a two-minute span.
Bucknell, which trailed by 11 (56-45) with seven minutes to play, narrowed the score to four points three times in the final 1:07, but could draw no closer. Kristina Collymore, who made 5 of 7 from the free throw line, made 1 of 2 with 1:07 to play to cut the deficit to 62-58. The margin was also four points following a Hope Foster free throw, and at the final horn when Foster scored the final of her career-high 13 points on a lay-up as the buzzer sounded.
Collymore led the pesky Bison defense, which forced 14 second-half turnovers, and 20 in the game, with three second-half steals. Lindsey Hollobaugh contributed four in the game, while Kesha Champion had three of her own. After turning the ball over 11 times in the first half, Bucknell had just seven second-half miscues.
Collymore registered her final steal of the game with 35 seconds left and broke ahead of the pack. However, she missed the uncontested lay-up that would have cut the margin to just 62-60 with 30 seconds remaining. Army, which owned the possession arrow, gained possession of the ball when there was a tie-up situation on the rebound. Rejera Arnold, who had eight points and four assists, made 1 of 2 free throws on the ensuing possession to seal the game for the Black Knights.
Bucknell fell behind early in the first half when Army opened up a 16-6 lead by making six of its first eight field goals. The Bison would draw no closer until the second half as the Black Knights used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to open up a 28-12 advantage as Bucknell did not score for more than five minutes.
After trailing by 20 points, its largest deficit of the game, at 36-16 with 5:01 remaining in the first half, Bucknell reeled off seven straight points in just over two minutes behind a three-pointer from Collymore and a pair of baskets from Tomovich and Hollobaugh. However, the Army defense, which forced 11 first-half turnovers, held the Bison scoreless over the final 2:49 to take a 38-23 lead into halftime.
Bucknell made 11 of 25 field goals in the first 20 minutes of play, while Army connected on 15 of 33, including four of its first five from three-point range. For the game, the Bison were 26 of 54 from the field, while the Black Knights made 25 of 54. However, Army was 5 of 11 from three-point range, while Bucknell was just 1 of 8.
The Bison were outrebounded 36-28 in the game with Foster and Hollobaugh leading the way with five apiece. Holden led Army with nine rebounds, while Lindsay Brent added eight.
Collymore, who equaled her career high with 12 points, and Hollobaugh, who saw her string of eight consecutive 20-point game against Patriot League foes snapped with 10 points, joined Tomovich and Foster in double figures.
Bucknell returns home for its final non-league game of the season Monday night against Fairleigh Dickinson. The game will take place at Sojka Pavilion at 7 p.m.
