LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team picked up their first win of the season by defeating Quinnipiac 3-2 in a very fast-paced and physical contest on Sunday afternoon at Graham Field. The victory was the 100th career win for head coach Heather Lewis.
Sophomore Callista Costopoulos scored the game-winner with 6:11 to go in the game off assists from Cara Turner and Alex Kyzmir. Costopoulos used the penalty corner to send a hard shot from the top of the circle into the cage. The goal is the first of the season for Costopoulos.
With four of the game's five goals scored on penalty corner situations, a last minute penalty corner was definitely a reason to worry. With time ticking away, the Bobcats gave the Bison one last scare when they were awarded a penalty corner but came up short when junior Liz Jordan came up with the save on a shot from Amy Cunniff. Jordan had fives saves on the day.
It was evident early on that both teams were ready to play when the scoreboard read 1-1 after only six minutes of play. Quinnipiac was the first to strike when Cunniff knocked home a goal off a pass from teammate Chelsea Osbrey with 33:10 to go in the first period.
At the 6:09 mark, the Bison answered with a goal from freshman Kelly Hoffman making the score 1-1. The score was Hoffman's first career goal.
In the second half, Bucknell took the lead 2-1 when junior Katie Watt found herself in the right place at the right time and sent a rebound from a save by goalie Erin McKay into the net. McKay saved five shots during the game. The goal was the first of the season for Watt.
Quinnipiac returned the favor at the 54:35 mark when Kristen McCarthy got the rebound from a Liz Jordan save and scored to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bison, who are now 1-2 overall, will be at home again on Tuesday against St. Francis (Pa.) at 6 p.m. They end a four-game homestand with Monmouth on Saturday at 2 p.m.
