Oneonta, N.Y. - Senior Jonathan Hemmert scored the Bucknell men's soccer team's only goal of the game, but it was enough to earn a 1-1 tie with Hartwick in the 2004 season opener Saturday evening at Elmore Field. The contest marked the beginning of the 75th season of men's soccer for the Bison.
Hemmert put Bucknell on the board at the 24:26 mark when he took a direct kick following a yellow card on the Hawks' Phil Flannery. Hemmert's kick, from just outside 18 yards, sailed around the wall of Hartwick defenders and into the left side of the goal to stake the Bison to a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 58:58 mark when Hartwick's Chris Jackson knotted the score at 1-1 following a misplay on the Bison defensive side of the field.
From that point on, Edwards, who recorded six saves, and his counterpart Josh Wagenaar, who stopped three shots, shut down the offenses. Despite the performance of the goalies, both teams did have opportunities to score as the Hawks attempted 12 shots and the Bison nine.
"Either team could have won this game," said Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "It was a very exciting and intense game with a high energy level."
Bucknell stands at 0-0-1 following the contest. Hartwick, which defeated Lafayette of the Patriot League earlier in the week, owns a 1-0-1 mark.
The Bison return to the field Friday evening, Sept. 10, against College of Charleston. The match will take place in Columbia, S.C., at 5 p.m.
