LEWISBURG, Pa. - Former University of Arkansas pitcher Scott Heather has joined the Bucknell baseball coaching staff, head coach Gene Depew recently announced. Heather, who had been an assistant coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith since 1999, will serve as pitching coach on the Bison staff.
Heather began his playing career at Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz., where he was MVP of the 1996 team that was ranked third nationally, before moving on to Arkansas. Heather lettered for the Razorbacks as a pitcher in 1997 and 1998, then became a student assistant in 1999 when Arkansas won its first Southeastern Conference championship. He also pitched professionally for the Duluth Dukes of the Northern League in 1998.
Heather, who has a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology, oversaw the pitching staff, strength and conditioning program, recruiting and fundraising during his five-year tenure at Arkansas-Forth Smith. Under his watch, numerous UAFS pitchers were either drafted or moved on to Division I programs. UAFS posted a 35-17 record last spring.
"I'm very pleased to have Scott join our program," said Depew. "His background as a pitcher at Arkansas and his years of coaching experience have prepared him to be a positive contributor to our pitching staff. I think Scott brings a lot to Bucknell baseball."
Heather joins Depew and a Bison squad that finished the 2004 campaign with a 20-24 record, 7-13 in the Patriot League. Bucknell won the conference title in 2003.
Bucknell sponsors 26 intercollegiate sports, including 14 women, at the Division I level (I-AA in football). It is a charter member of the Patriot League and has won the league's all-sports championship in 11 of the 14 years it has been contested, including the last seven in a row. Bucknell led the nation with a 100 percent graduation rate in the most recent survey and ranks third in Division I in producing Academic All-Americans.
