LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team used goals from three different players in the first 25 minutes of play to build a 3-0 lead before hanging on to defeat Army 3-1 in the Patriot League opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at West Fields.
The Bison (2-4-1, 1-0-0 PL) scored twice in the first 15 minutes with junior Scott Visnic picking up the assist each time. Junior Eric Brunton tallied his first goal of the year in the sixth minute. He took a pass from Visnic, who was stationed on the left side of the box, and found the back of the net on the right side. Less than nine minutes later senior Jonathan Hemmert scored his third goal of the season with Visnic earning credit for the assist.
Visnic also had a hand in Bucknell's final goal, which came 24:06 into the first half. The Hillsborough, N.J., native was tripped up by Army goalie Matt Wesmiller, earning the goalkeeper a yellow card. Senior Michael Lookingland took the ensuing penalty kick and scored the third goal of the game for the Bison.
Bucknell started the second half with a 3-0 lead for the second consecutive game, but for the second straight match did not score after intermission. The best chance for the Bison to score came with just over eight minutes to play when Brunton attempted a shot from directly in front of the goal that Wesmiller turned away. Visnic gathered in the rebound and fired a shot off the crossbar, which Brunton gained control of and fired another shot just to the left of the goal.
The Black Knights' (2-6-0, 0-1-0) only goal came in the 56th minute when David Yu restarted play after a Bucknell foul and found Chase Hunter who headed the ball past Bison goalie Adam Edwards. Edwards made two saves in the game.
Bucknell, which attempted nine shots in each half, outshot Army by an 18-9 margin in the physical game that saw five yellow cards and 29 fouls called.
The Bison continue their five-match homestand Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Colgate at West Fields.
