LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell Bison field hockey team improved to .500 on Tuesday night after shutting out the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 3-0, at Graham Field. Junior Kelly O'Brien and sophomores Alex Kyzmir and Anne Lutz each scored a goal for Bucknell.
Kyzmir was the first to score for the Bison when she received a feed from teammate Meiko Boynton on the left side of the goal and sent it home for the score with 9:05 to go in the first half. The goal is Kyzmir's fifth of the 2004 season and gives her the team lead for goals this season.
Moments later, O'Brien took advantage of the UMBC penalty and scored on a penalty shot with 5:34 to go in the first frame. O'Brien's penalty shot was her fourth goal of the year and also her third in the last two games.
The second half remained scoreless for over 25 minutes until the 61:26 mark when Kyzmir sent a shot at UMBC goalie Meghan Polek who deflected the shot back at Lutz who sent the rebound home for her first goal of the season to put Bucknell up 3-0.
The Bison played strong defensively allowing the Retrievers only five shots on the night. Bucknell also outdrew UMBC in penalty corners, racking up six to UMBC's three. Junior goalie Liz Jordan got the shut-out in her 70:00 of play.
The Bison, now 4-4, begin their Patriot League schedule this weekend when they travel to College Park, Md. to face American. The contest is set to begin Saturday at 11 a.m. American holds the second-best record in the league at 6-2.
