LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell Bison field hockey team came up a goal short after mounting a strong second half comeback falling to Indiana, 3-2, Sunday at Graham Field. Callista Costopoulos and Alex Kyzmir each had a goal for the Bison while Meiko Boynton added two assists.
"The came down to athleticism," said Bucknell head coach Heather Lewis in a post-game interview. "Both teams played with heart and we played hard and didn't quit."
Indiana led, 2-0, at the half after scoring two goals within three minutes of each other in the first half of action. Frederique Meeuswen was the first to strike for the Hoosiers as she caught a pass from teammate Lesley Wiler and sent the ball into the Bison goal from the right side of the cage at the 15:18 mark.
Almost three minutes later, Meredith Brown scored for the Hoosiers on a penalty corner when she lofted the ball over the Bison defense to put her team up, 2-0, thanks to assists from Lydia Schrott and Mallory Reabold.
After the break, the Bison had plenty of opportunities to score with seven penalty corners in the second half of play but ran into a solid Hoosier defense that did not allow the Bison much shooting room. The teams tied with 12 corners apiece for the game.
The Bison got their first score of the game at the 37:12 mark when Meiko Boynton sent a bullet across the circle to meet Kyzmir who tipped the ball in from the left side of the Hoosier goal, making the score 2-1.
The Hoosiers answered at 50:39 into the contest as Lydia Schrott intercepted a pass at midfield and scored Indiana's third and final goal on a breakaway.
The Bison made one last charge on a penalty corner situation when the inbounds pass came to Boynton who faked the shot and slid the ball to Costopoulos who rocketed the ball into the goal from the left wing making the score 3-2 with just over six minutes of action remaining.
Bucknell got off 18 shots in the match to Indiana's 19, however the Bison ran into a brick wall in Hoosier goalie Katie Kanara. Kanara racked up 10 saves on the day.
The Bison defense was also strong with Liz Jordan saving five Hoosier shots and Corin Inderbitzin-Brooks and Steph Cabral making big defensive saves in the second half.
"Our defense did a very good job," said Lewis. "Jordan kept us in it in the end."
Next up for the Bison, who are now 5-7, will be Patriot League foe Holy Cross. The game is set for Saturday, Oct 9 beginning at 12 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
