LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second-straight home game, the Bucknell field hockey squad fought until the final whistle, but came up a goal short against Villanova, 3-2. Senior Meiko Boynton and freshman Chyncia Smith both scored a goal in the loss.
Villanova put the eventual gamewinning goal on the board with 23:00 to go in the game when Wildcat Jenny Nelson tipped in the score from the bottom of a pileup in front of the Bison goal and put her team up, 3-1.
Refusing to throw in the towel, the Bison continued to attack the Wildcat defense. Smith gave the Bison a late-game lift off the bench and scored her first career goal on a hard shot from top of the circle to bring the Bison within a goal at 3-2 with 8:30 to go in the game. Unfortunately for the Bison, the score would remain 3-2 when time ran out.
The Bison came out fighting from the very beginning of the game, scoring within the first five minutes of play when a scramble ensued in front of the Wildcat goal and Boynton found the ball and slapped it home to make the score 1-0 with 4:32 gone by.
Bucknell's defense held strong for the next 15 minutes until Villanova's Megan Foster scored from the left side of the Bison cage knotting the score at 1-1, 21:42 into the game.
The Wildcats did not stop there, scoring again just under five minutes later, at the 26:13 mark, when Rory Rogers slid a pass to teammate Lauren Campanelli who gave Villanova the, 2-1, lead.
The first half showed a fairly even matchup with Villanova getting off nine shots to Bucknell's six. The teams each had been awarded three penalty corners by the break.
The second half saw a much more aggressive Wildcat offense that slapped 13 shots at the Bison defense. Bucknell goalie Liz Jordan stepped up to the challenge making eight saves in the second half, 11 for the game.
The loss drops Bucknell to 5-9 overall while Villanova improves to 9-4 in the non-league matchup. The Bison will be in action again on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they face the Lafayette Leopards in Patriot League play. The game is set for 1 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
