COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mike Sambursky scored with 1:36 remaining in regulation to give South Carolina a 1-0 victory over Bucknell in men's soccer action at the South Carolina Gamecock Classic Sunday afternoon. The Bison fell to 0-2-1 on the season.
Sambursky netted the game-winning goal for the Gamecocks (4-0-0) when he converted a header of a corner kick from Sebastian Lindholm.
The turning point of the game came when Bucknell's Eric Brunton picked up his second yellow card in the 85th minute, leaving the Bison with only 10 players on the field.
Both teams attempted 13 shots, but Bucknell had the edge in corner kicks, 8-3, as it kept the ball on its offensive side of the field much of the contest.
Junior goalkeeper Adam Edwards made six saves for the Bison. Brad Guzan stopped seven shots for South Carolina.
Junior Scott Visnic, who netted Bucknell's only goal of the weekend Friday against College of Charleston, and senior Michael Lookingland, who led a defense that allowed just three goals in two matches, were named to the All-Tournament team.
"We played with passion today," said Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "We had a chance to win it and gave up a late goal to a very good team that will be ranked next week."
The Bison return to the field Wednesday afternoon at La Salle at 4 p.m. That contest will be the last of four consecutive road matches to start the season as next Sunday, Sept. 19, Bucknell makes its home debut with a game against James Madison.
