LEWISBURG, Pa. - Tolu Fayanjuola (Providence, R.I./Classical) won the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week award for her fine performance at the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships held last weekend at Army. She provided 27 of the Bison's 182 points single-handedly as Bucknell won its fifth league outdoor title in six years.
Fayanjuola's 19'8 ?" long jump broke the Bucknell record as well as the Patriot League Championship record. The former school mark was 19'0 ?", set by Jill Wise in 1988. Entering the year, Fayanjuola had not been in the school's top-10. The league outdoor meet record was 19'1 ?", set by Army's Tiffany Martin in 2002. In the event, Fayanjuola bested Lehigh's Lindsey Hinsch by 7 ?".
But the long jump was only one occasion in which Fayanjuola bested Martin, as the Bison junior finished the 100 meters in 12.44 seconds, .18 seconds better than runner-up Martin. Fayanjuola's career-best 12.12 finish from earlier this season is fourth-fastest in Bucknell history.
In the high jump, Fayanjuola leapt a silver-medal 5'3", tied for eighth-best in school history. Winner Shannon O'Hagan of Colgate won with a leap of 5'5".
In addition, Fayanjuola helped contribute six points on a third-place 4x100 meter squad that finished in a Bucknell tied-for-second-best all-time 48.08 seconds.
While this week's Bison Athlete of the Week, decided on by the Bucknell Office of Athletic Communications, is already ticketed for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference's meet May 13-16 in New Haven, Conn., in the long jump, 100 and 4x100, the Bison will look to add more qualifiers to that meet this Saturday at the Penn State Open. Fayanjuola has also already qualified for NCAA Regional competition in the long jump and 100, held May 28-29 at the University of Florida.
